Rick Edwards of the Colonial Horn Shoppe built the powder horns shown below. We show them here for examples of our work.

The powder horns below with the very dark throat areas have had excessive amounts of stain applied to the area to make them a deep dark brown. In some cases the stain has rubbed off on the owners hand if it became wet. I personally suggest that a customer chooses the lighter stained horns. In this case we wipe the horn down with a wet rag after staining to remove the excess stain. The Joseph Testa and Jason Williams horns are some examples of those we wiped down after staining to remove the excess.

The above powder horn is a "Map Horn" built for Mark Wilcox. The horn carries one line of simple text stating "In God We Trust" and the owner's name.

Rick, I received my horn yesterday & I have to tell you it is truly a work of art! Your scrimshaw work is outstanding! This horn is exactly what I've been looking for, for some time now.  It looks like something right out of the 18th Century.  It's definitely something I can pass down to my children. Thank you for your hard work & dedication to getting my horn to me as soon as possible.  You certainly are a craftsman of the old style.   Again, many thanks & God bless!

Your Friend,

Mark Wilcox

The above powder horn is the main horn of a horn/priming horn set built for Jerry Allison. It has the Rogers Rangers Scotch Thistle insignia scrimshawed along with two text lines.

The above powder horn is a "Map Horn" built for Warren Grossklaus. The horn carries one line of simple text. The map art was provided by the customer.

The above powder horn and measurer was made for Lafin Jack, a member of the FCF. The powder horn is our "Woodsman" style (see the Woodsman below on this page) with the addition of two text lines, border lines, and the running deer.

The "Priming Horn" (close-up) measures approx. 7.5 inches along the outside curve.

The above powder horns make up the Daniel Ward powder horn set. The set includes the main horn and the priming horn. Those who prime their pan with a finer grade of powder than used in the muzzle load need the priming horn to carry the additional powder.

The Joseph Testa horn is a left hand powder horn of the Rev. War period and it shows an example of our optional fancy lettering in the text lines.

This Buffalo Powder Horn was built for Alan Garbers, a writer for Muzzle Blasts Magazine. The buffalo powder horns were commonly used by Native Americans as well as the Fur Trappers of the early nineteenth century.

The DeLea Sayers horn has a customer supplied piece of art on the inside of the horn.

The Jason Williams horn of the F&I period has one of my own Christian quotes along with the running vine and running deer. A nice combination.

The "Woodsman" Horn is somewhat plain. No recessed throat or engrailing.

"I Will Praise The Lord On The Mountain Top For He Is With Me In The Valley -- Ryan Edwards - His Horn" are the words engraved on this powder horn. This horn appears as an example of powder horns produced by The Colonial Horn Shoppe.

On the back side of my powder horns, near the pine butt plug, I engrave the above message which includes the year the horn was made. The purpose of this is to identify the horn with it's maker which will be of value for future generations regarding the powder horn's dollar value. Also, the year is engraved in an effort to prevent dishonesty as to the horns age. Of course we don't think our customers would do this but one never knows who may own the powder horn in the future. Most all of the antique horns in collections do not reside with their original owner's family. The above is an example and may vary somewhat in appearance on any particular powder horn.
